Brief Description

Applications for visiting fellows are encouraged by the Ghent University Association’s (GAP) Africa Platform. GAP, one of Ghent University’s six regional platforms, promotes and facilitates academic cooperation between the Ghent University Association and educational institutions in Africa. Each year, the Africa Platform welcomes five visiting research fellows. A minimum of two weeks must be spent at Ghent University or one of the affiliated University Colleges by award recipients.

The postdoctoral researchers (junior or senior lecturers and professors) who are connected to an African higher education or research institution are the target audience for the Africa Platform fellowships. The African institution and Ghent University must have a bilateral agreement or memorandum of understanding in place.

  • Cluster 2:
    • Angola, Botswana, Burundi, Djibouti, Eritrea, Eswatini, Ethiopia, Kenya, Lesotho, Madagascar, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Rwanda, Somalia, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia, Zimbabwe. 
  • P.S: Only candidates affiliated to universities in Cluster 1 countries can apply.

Scholarship Award Benefit

All of the following will be provided by the university:

  • The fellowships include a stipend of € 1000 plus one round-trip ticket for a minimum stay of two weeks, which is intended to pay for (or help defray the cost of) travel, lodging, and living expenses.
  • This implies that more financing will frequently be required; take notice that we will only take into account new research funds; we will not take into account personal resources. The visiting scholars will get an office and have access to resources (such the library) as a visiting scholar at Ghent University.

    • The research plan’s inspiration, viability, and academic quality: 25%
    • 50% of applicants must meet the criteria for added value and sustainability (effect of the research stay on future departmental and institutional collaboration).
    • Priority will be given to new forms of partnership, which pertain to new projects with a new scope; as a result, candidates who haven’t had an opportunity to visit UGent in the last 12 months will receive preference.
    • Research that is interdisciplinary will be given preference.
  • Application-Required Documents:
    • Individual data;
    • a cover letter in which you mention the duration of your visit, the research group you will be associated with, a justification of how a research stay in Ghent would advance your present and future studies at your home university, and whether your visit relates to a novel kind of partnership;
    • a research strategy (including goals, techniques, a schedule for the visit, potential long-term collaboration plans, interdisciplinarity of the study, etc.);
    • a budget
    • three of your most significant publications listed;
    • Your signature as well as the promoter of Ghent University. This implies that during the application stage, you should already have a Ghent University promoter. The online research directory might aid you in your quest for a promoter if you do not already have connections to Ghent University.
    • Along with the application form, you must attach a brief motivational statement from the Ghent University promotor, a brief CV (maximum of two pages), and documentation of your PhD degree.
