Brief Description

Three undergraduate students and two graduate students are given the Ruth Abernathy Presidential Scholarship in January of each year. This scholarship was created by the prior presidents of SHAPE America to recognize meritorious students.

Graduate prizes are $1,750 apiece, while undergraduate awards are each worth $1,250. Additionally, recipients get a free three-year membership to SHAPE America.

Eligibility Criteria

All applicants must meet the following criteria to be considered for the Ruth Abernathy Presidential Scholarship at the University of Alabama, USA 2023-24:

For Undergraduate Applicants:

The candidate must be an active SHAPE America member. Undergraduate students can enroll when they apply.
The applicant must major in dance, physical education, recreation, or health.
The applicant must have earned at least 60 semester or 90 quarter units of college credit and be in their junior or senior year of study at a baccalaureate-awarding college or university.
On a scale of 4.0, the applicant’s total grade point average must be at least 3.5. The applicant’s total GPA must take into account the GPAs from all of the colleges they attended in order to get their present degree.
The candidate must have never before received a Ruth Abernathy Presidential Scholarship. The National Presidential Scholarship of SHAPE America is not open to past grantees.
For Graduate Applicants:

The candidate must be an active SHAPE America member. Graduate students can enroll when they apply.
The applicant must major in dance, physical education, health, or recreation.
The applicant must be a full-time, matriculated master’s or doctorate student.
On a scale of 4.0, the applicant’s total grade point average must be at least 3.5.
The candidate must have never before received a Ruth Abernathy Presidential Scholarship.The National Presidential Scholarship of SHAPE America is not open to past grantees. The graduate scholarship grant is not available to winners who are undergraduates.
