The Borel Global Fellows Program stands as a powerful force in addressing food and nutrition insecurity, aiming to uplift subsistence farmers in Sub-Saharan Africa.   • Kenya, Tanzania, Malawi, Zimbabwe and Uganda 

Scholarship Award Benefit

The university will provide all of the following:

  • Financial Support:
    • Up to $25,000 per year per student
    • Available for:
      • Graduate student stipends
      • Combination of partial stipend and research funding
  • Duration of Support:
    • MS Students: Up to 30 months
    • PhD Students: Up to 42 months
  • Research-Related Travel Funding:
    • Available for travel by the student and advisor to and from Africa
    • Specifically for research purposes

Eligibility Criteria

All applicants must meet the following criteria to be considered for the Iowa State University Borel Global Fellow Scholarships, USA 2024-25:

  1. Admission Requirement:
    • Be admitted into a graduate program in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences
  2. Citizenship Requirement:
    • Be a citizen of a Sub-Saharan African country
  3. Career Commitment:
    • Commit to completing graduate studies as preparation for a career contributing to food security in Sub-Saharan Africa
  4. Research Location:
    • Complete the majority of graduate research in Sub-Saharan Africa
  5. Post-Graduation Intentions:
    • Demonstrate intention to work and live in Sub-Saharan Africa after completing graduate studies

The following procedure remains the only viable route to apply rightfully:

  1. Submission Components:
    • Cover letter from the major professor
    • CV of the student
    • Copy of the student’s goal statement
  2. Submission Deadline:
    • January 15 annually
  3. Cover Letter Content:
    • Major professor’s commitment to provide remaining funding (tuition, fees, and research costs)
    • Major professor’s commitment to support student’s research in Sub-Saharan Africa
  4. Application Submission:
