Brief Description

UK Commonwealth Scholarships for Master’s and PhD studies in the UK are available each year for nationals of Commonwealth developing nations. 

The UK Department for International Development (DFID) is providing funding for these scholarships with the intention of advancing UK interests abroad and international development goals, fostering quality in UK higher education, and upholding Commonwealth values.

Scholarship Award Benefit

All of the following will be provided by the university:

  • Each award comes with:
  • Airfare from your place of origin to the UK and back at the conclusion of your grant, as approved (the CSC will not reimburse the cost of fares for dependants, nor usually the cost of journeys made before your award is finally confirmed)
  • Exam and tuition costs that have been approved
  • Stipend (living allowance)
  • Thesis grant to cover costs associated with writing a thesis or dissertation, as appropriate.
  • Where appropriate, a warm clothing allowance
  • Study travel grant to cover the costs of studying abroad or in the UK
  • In cases where it is authorized, PhD scholars may get a fieldwork stipend to help with the expense of doing fieldwork abroad (often the cost of one round-trip ticket in economy class).
  • PhD Scholars receiving UK Commonwealth Scholarships.
  • airfare for a paid mid-term visit to your home nation, unless you have already obtained a return ticket for fieldwork or have already claimed (or plan to claim) spouse and/or kid allowances during your scholarship.
  • If you are accompanying your children and they are residing with you at the same address in the UK and you have children and are widowed, divorced, or a single parent, you are entitled to a child allowance of £529 per month for the first child and £131 per month for the second and third children under the age of 16. (rates quoted at current levels)

Eligibility Criteria

All applicants must meet the following criteria to be considered for the Fully Funded Commonwealth Scholarships for Developing Countries, UK 2023-24:

  • being a citizen of, receiving refugee status from, or a British Protected Person from one of the qualifying Commonwealth nations
  • becoming a permanent resident of a Commonwealth nation
  • By the beginning of the UK academic year in September 2023, be prepared to begin your academic studies there.
  • possess a first degree with at least upper second class (2:1) honors or a second-class degree (2:2) and a suitable postgraduate degree (a Master’s degree) by September 2023.
  • NOT be enrolled in a PhD program or an MPhil that leads to a PhD before September 2022 in a UK university.
  • NOT have started or be enrolled in a PhD program, an MPhil program leading to a PhD program, in your own country or overseas.
  • Have at least one UK university who might be your supervisor’s support mentioned on your application form.
  • Submitted the necessary supporting material in the requested format.
  • be in need of this scholarship and not be able to afford to study in the UK
  • being a citizen of, receiving refugee status from, or a British Protected Person from one of the qualifying Commonwealth nations
  • becoming a permanent resident of a Commonwealth nation
  • By the beginning of the UK academic year in September 2023, be prepared to begin your academic studies there.
  • possess a first degree with at least upper second class (2:1) honors or a second class degree (2:2) and an appropriate postgraduate degree (often a Master’s degree) by September 2023. A second UK Master’s degree is not often funded by the CSC. if you’re requesting an additional UK Master’s degree.
  • You must give explanation for why you want to conduct this investigation.
  • NOT be enrolled in a PhD program or an MPhil that leads to a PhD at an institution in the UK or in your country of residence before September 2023.
  • be in need of this scholarship and not be able to afford to study in the UK
  • Submitted the necessary supporting material in the requested format.
Fully Funded Commonwealth Scholarships

Application Procedure

The following procedure remains the only viable route to apply rightfully:

  • The CSC does not accept direct applications for these scholarships; instead, you must first submit an application to one of the following nominating bodies:
    • The primary application method is through national nominating organizations.
    • a select few institutions or academic groups that are allowed to propose their own academic personnel
    • a few charities and non-governmental organizations
  • One of these nominating bodies must be used for all applications. Every nominating body is in charge of its own selection procedure, which could include extra qualifying requirements. Your nominating body’s precise application guidelines, requirements for eligibility, and application deadlines must all be confirmed with them.
  • In addition to any additional applications that your nominating body may ask you to submit, you must submit your application using the CSC’s online application system. Applications not submitted through the online application method will not be accepted by the CSC.
  • The online application system will be quite busy in the days preceding up to the application deadline, therefore it is encouraged that you finish and submit your application as soon as you can.
  • Nominating organizations or applications sent outside of the online application system will not be accepted by the CSC as supporting material.
