All of the following will be provided by the university:

  • Research fellowships for support
    • For travel and living expenses while visiting the Royal Society collections and other, nearby academic collections, up to £2,000 per month for a maximum of three months is allowed.
    • If applying under this subsistence aspect of the initiative, researchers from both abroad and the UK must include research at the Royal Society as part of their proposal.
  • Travel subsidies
    • Up to £2,000 may be used for overseas travel to any location where research is pertinent, for brief exploration vacations (no more than one month), or for a single event. The following requirements must be met before applying for this travel component of the program for scholars located in UK organizations to attend any pertinent overseas research location or event:
      • The grant is designed to pay for participation at a particular, pertinent event, such as a conference. The planned destination organization grants written authorization to access research materials. 
      • The duration of foreign research is no more than one month.

Eligibility Criteria

All applicants must meet the following criteria to be considered for the Lisa Jardine Grant Scheme for Postgraduate Students by the Royal Society, UK 2022-23

  • Researchers in early research roles in universities and other qualified organizations who have recently received their PhDs (e.g. museums, galleries). For the length of the award, the applicant must be employed by an organization that qualifies on a permanent or fixed-term contract.

  • PhD students are invited to apply, although it is recommended that they start with smaller, exploratory visit travel grants (see below) before submitting a bigger request, particularly if their research is still in its early stages.

  • Early Modern science and European networks are given particular attention in the plan.
  • Applications from the UK and other countries are accepted. Researchers with affiliations to non-UK institutions must include research conducted at The Royal Society in their proposals.
  • In order to be considered for a subsistence grant for a lengthy study trip (1-3 months), candidates from the UK and abroad must include research at the Royal Society collections in their application.
