Brief Description

International and domestic students are welcome to apply for Improving Young Mothers’ Mental Health Literacy via the Development of a Digital Learning Resource. The scholarship permits students to pursue research-level programs in any of Western Sydney University’s subject areas. The scholarship deadline is April 30, 2022.

Western Sydney University academic and professional staff from the School of Health Sciences, School of Nursing and Midwifery, School of Humanities and Communication Arts, Translational Health Research Institute, The Centre for Transforming Early Education and Child Health (TeEACH), and The MARCS Institute for Brain, Behaviour, and Development have collaborated with the Western Sydney Local Health District’s Perinatal Child Youth Mental Health Service (PCYMHS).

Community-based organizations will deliver a project supported by the Ministry of Health that will focus on the Emerging Priorities of the Perinatal Mental Health and Wellbeing Program. ‘Young Well Beings – Improving young mothers’ mental health literacy via the development of a digital learning resource co-designed with consumers and people who have lived experience’ is the title of the project.

The project’s main goal is to create a digital resource from the ground up that assists young mothers’ perinatal journey as a preventative tool to promote their mental health. The PhD student will be immersed in the project and will have the chance to investigate research topics that arise during the creation and implementation of this resource, such as but not limited to:

1) What are young mothers’ experiences, needs, and expectations in terms of mental health and wellbeing throughout the perinatal period, and how do these differ among socio-cultural groups?

2) What are stakeholders’ opinions of young mothers’ needs and how they could use and benefit from mental health literacy resources?

3) What are the advantages and disadvantages of developing a co-designed, lived experience-informed learning resource aimed at young mothers?

4) How beneficial is a co-designed digital resource in promoting the well-being of young mothers?

The PhD study will use a qualitative approach, using a variety of data gathering techniques.

The candidate will have the chance to collaborate with a variety of government and non-government organizations in the mental health and perinatal domains, as well as a multi-disciplinary team of world-renowned academics, on this project.

Scholarship Award Benefit

All of the following will be provided by the university: 

• Domestic applicants will get a tax-free stipend of $30,000 each year for up to three years to help with living expenses, thanks to the RTP Fee Offset.
• International candidates will get a $30,000 tax-free stipend every year for up to three years to help with living expenses. A tuition cost waiver will be available to those who have a great track record.
• Support for training, conference attendance, fieldwork, and other research fees that the School has authorized.

Eligibility Criteria

All applicants must meet the following criteria to be considered for the Improving Young Mothers’ Mental Health Literacy Scholarship at Western Sydney University, Australia 2022:

• have one of the following credentials and experience I an Australian First Class Bachelor (Honours) degree; (ii) a coursework Master’s degree with at least 25% research component; (iii) a Research Master’s degree; or (iv) comparable overseas qualifications.
• exhibit outstanding academic achievement in courses relevant to one or more project areas of interest, such as qualitative and participatory approaches, socioeconomic determinants of health, youth mental health, education and training, and digital media, to name a few.
• have a good knowledge of the relevance of mental health in children and adolescents.
• be open to learning and honing abilities in participatory research, co-design, and digital media
• have exceptional writing and verbal communication abilities
• be willing to collaborate with others in a group setting
• be prepared to travel around NSW to do fieldwork
• be passionate and strongly driven to pursue higher education.
