The University of British Columbia Outstanding International Student (OIS) Awards are awarded to exceptional international students entering undergraduate programs at UBC.

About the Award: About the Honor: The Extraordinary Global Understudy (OIS) Grant is a one-time, merit-based passageway grant granted to qualified understudies when they are offered admission to UBC. Understudies chose for this honor show quality scholastically and show contribution outside of the classroom.

Eligibility: To be considered for an OIS Award, you must:

  • be new to UBC, entering directly from secondary school or post-secondary (university or college)
  • be an international student studying at UBC on a Canadian study permit (student visa). (Changes to your citizenship status will affect your scholarship eligibility.)
  • demonstrate outstanding academic achievement and strong extracurricular involvement
  • apply to UBC by January 15

Number and Value of Awards: The number and level of these scholarships awarded each year vary, depending on available funding.

How to Apply:  If you apply to UBC by January 15, you will be automatically considered for the OIS Award.

Brief description:

The University of Waterloo is offering the Worldwide Ace’s Honor of Greatness (IMAE) to global understudies who wish to embrace Experts degree programs that are research-based, at the university of Waterloo. Resources will assign qualified understudies dependent on the Staff’s honor portion. Students will be chosen dependent on scholarly greatness as exhibited through their application for admission to the alumni program.

Eligibility:

Applicants must be International students with a valid Canadian study permit who are registered full time and assessed international tuition fees. The scholarship will normally be awarded to Masters degree students in research-based programs (thesis or major research paper). Only students entering the first term of their program are eligible. Applicants must demonstrate academic excellence through criteria established by the Faculty and must meet the academic progress requirements of their program and not have outstanding probationary admission requirements.

Application instructions:

Students will be automatically considered for this award based on their application for admission; hence no separate scholarship application is required. Departments and/or Faculties will select the students and nominate for the scholarship. The University of Calgary International Entrance Scholarship was made to draw in and hold elite doctoral understudies and to set up Canada as a worldwide focal point of greatness in research and higher learning. The grants are towards a doctoral qualification (or joined Mama/PhD or MD/PhD).

Scholarship value/inclusions:

The scholarship is $15,000, renewable annually in the second, third and fourth year at the University of Calgary, provided recipients achieve a GPA of 2.60 or more over a minimum of 24.00 units in the previous fall and winter terms. The total amount over 4 years of undergraduate program is $60,000.

Eligibility:

Applicants must be international students who are registered full-time in an undergraduate degree program that commences in the Fall term. They have to be new students. To be considered for a scholarship, a student must normally present a minimum GPA of 3.20. They must also have satisfied the university’s English Language Proficiency requirement.

Application instructions:

The application deadline for Fall 2021 admission is 15 December 2020 (early admission) and 1 March 2021 (standard admission). The application deadline for the International Entrance Scholarship is 1 December 2020.

Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships (Vanier CGS)

Brief description: 

The Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships (Vanier CGS) was made to draw in and hold elite doctoral understudies and to set up Canada as a worldwide focal point of greatness in research and higher learning. The grants are towards a doctoral certificate (or consolidated Mama/PhD or MD/PhD).

Host Institution(s):

Canadian Universities with Vanier CGS allocation. Without exception, the Vanier CGS is tenable only at the eligible Canadian institution that submitted the nomination.

Level/Field(s) of study:

PhD programmes (or combined MA/PhD or MD/PhD) in health research; natural sciences and/or engineering research; and social sciences and/or humanities research

An eligible doctoral program must include a significant research component that leads to the completion of a thesis, major research project, dissertation, scholarly publication, performance, recital and/or exhibit that is merit/expert-reviewed at the institutional level as requirement for a completion of the program.

Joint graduate research programs with a professional degree (e.g., MD/PhD, DVM/PhD, JD/PhD) as well as clinically-oriented programs of study, including clinical psychology, are also eligible programs if they have a significant autonomous research component, as described above.

Number of Scholarships:

Up to 166 scholarships are awarded annually

Target group:

Canadian citizens, permanent residents of Canada and foreign citizens are eligible to be nominated for a Vanier CGS.

Scholarship value/duration:

The scholarships is worth $50,000 per year for three years.

Eligibility:

To be considered for a Vanier CGS, you must:

• be nominated by only one Canadian institution, which must have received a Vanier CGS quota;

• be pursuing your first doctoral degree (including joint undergraduate/graduate research program such as: MD/PhD, DVM/PhD, JD/PhD – if it has a demonstrated and significant research component). Note that only the PhD portion of a combined degree is eligible for funding;

• intend to pursue, in the summer semester or the academic year following the announcement of results, full-time doctoral (or a joint graduate program such as: MD/PhD, DVM/PhD, JD/PhD) studies and research at the nominating institution; Note that only the PhD portion of a combined degree is eligible for funding;

• have completed no more than 20 months of doctoral studies as of 1 May 2021

• have completed no more than 32 months of full-time study in their doctoral program, by 1 May 2021 if enrolled in a joint graduate research program, e.g., MD/PhD, MA/PhD, DVM/PhD. Applicants that fall into this category have access to the 32-month window whether or not they were previously enrolled in a Master’s program; or

• have completed no more than 32 months of full-time study in their doctoral program by 1 May 2021 if accelerated directly from a Bachelor’s to a PhD (no time spent in a Master’s program); or

• have completed no more than 32 months of full-time study in their doctoral program by 1 May 2021 if accelerated from a Master’s degree into a Doctoral program without obtaining the Master’s degree.

• have achieved a first-class average, as determined by your institution, in each of the last two years of full-time study or equivalent. Candidates are encouraged to contact the institution for its definition of a first-class average; and

• must not hold, or have held, a doctoral-level scholarship or fellowship from CIHR, NSERC or SSHRC to undertake or complete a doctoral degree.

Application instructions:

Candidates must be nominated by a Canadian Institution with a quota at which they want to study. Candidates cannot apply directly to the Vanier CGS program.   

Applications are initiated in one of two ways. Either the student informs the faculty of graduate studies at the selected institution of their intent to apply to the Vanier CGS program OR the institution initiates the nomination process by contacting the desired candidate.

Applications are prepared by the student and submitted to the nominating institution by their internal deadline using the ResearchNet application system.  The nominating institution then forwards recommended nominations to the Vanier-Banting Secretariat (the Secretariat) by 3 November 2020.
