Brief Description

Two fully supported scholarships for the MSc in Marine Systems and Policies are being offered by the Sustainable Aquaculture Innovation Centre (SAIC) for the 2023–2024 academic year. The chosen awardees are required to work with one of the consortium partners of SAIC on their dissertation research.

Eligibility Criteria

All applicants must meet the following criteria to be considered for the Sustainable Aquaculture Innovation Centre Scholarships at the University of Edinburgh, UK 2023-24:

  • Students who live in Scotland and want to enroll in the University of Edinburgh’s taught MSc in Marine Systems and Policies are encouraged to apply. Only students who meet the requirements for the Scottish Fee Tuition Rate may submit an application.
  • This award is available to new students starting in the 2023–2024 academic year. Candidates who have already started their study program by the application deadline are not eligible for this award. This award is ineligible for applicants who want to take part-time or online distance learning courses. Funding is not renewable, and sponsored spots cannot be postponed. It is not possible to transfer this scholarship to another program.
  • The worldwide equivalent of a UK 2:1 Honours degree at the undergraduate level is required of applicants, or they must anticipate obtaining it.
  • By receiving this scholarship, the winner commits to working on an MSc project that was created in collaboration with a consortium industry member business of the Scottish Aquaculture Innovation Centre (SAIC) that is pertinent to the Scottish Industry. 
  • Additionally, the candidate needs to have previously spoken with a SAIC member about prospective dissertation subjects.  Applicants are encouraged to contact any member-consortium of SAIC.
  • In a one-page personal statement, the candidate must express their interest in the marine aquaculture industry and explain how the scholarship would benefit them. 
  • If the candidate has spoken with a SAIC consortium partner about a research project or if a project has already been agreed upon, it must be disclosed in the personal statement.

  • Please be aware:
    •  The student will be expected to reimburse this money if they fail to finish their project with a SAIC partner as described above.
    • Within two weeks of submitting their final evaluation, the student must write a final report of their study and submit it to SAIC.

Application Procedure

The following procedure remains the only viable route to apply rightfully:

  • Applicants who match the qualifying requirements and have obtained a conditional or unconditional offer are encouraged to apply.  In order to be eligible for the scholarship, applicants with conditional offers must first get an unconditional offer. 
  • The Programme Directors must receive the eligible applicants’ personal statements through email:
    • Both Drs. Lea-Anne Henry and Sebastian Hennige can be reached at l.henry@ed.ac.uk.
  • Results are anticipated by the end of August 2021. A selection committee will convene to choose the beneficiaries, and all applicants will be informed of the decision.
  • Before financing is assured for the two grantees, they must confirm their agreed-upon research proposal with the SAIC consortium member, Dr. Henry, and Dr. Hennige.
  • If an applicant has already paid the deposit cost, this will be completely reimbursed to the student once the program starts. Successful recipients will not be required to pay the deposit fee.
