Brief Description

The PhD studentships offer funding for studies on topics relevant to the Commonwealth. Each year, there are two studentships available: one for Commonwealth students studying abroad and one for students enrolled in the UK.

Applications from a variety of humanities and social science0 fields are encouraged, but preference may be given to fields that the Round Table journal typically covers, such as (but not limited to) politics, international relations, economics, international history, geography, law, development studies, and area studies.

All of the following will be provided by the university:

  • On the day the prizes are announced, £4,000 GB will be paid. Upon fulfillment of the post-student criteria, the remaining £1,500 GBP will be paid.

Eligibility Criteria

All applicants must meet the following criteria to be considered for the International Commonwealth Studentships at the Association of Commonwealth Universities, UK 2023-24:

  • Although they need not be residents of the UK, registered PhD students from UK universities are eligible for the first studentship.
  • The second is accessible to enrolled PhD candidates from ACU member institutions in Commonwealth nations other than the UK, as well as to former Chevening and Commonwealth Scholarship recipients who are now pursuing their PhDs at any Commonwealth institution outside of the UK.
  • After-college requirements:
    • In order to be considered for publication in the Round Table journal, successful candidates must submit an article of between 4,000 and 6,000 words based on their research no later than twelve months after accepting the grant. Additionally, those who are selected must create a podcast on their study for the journal’s website.

Application Procedure

The following procedure remains the only viable route to apply rightfully:

  • By Friday, July 28, 2023, at 17.00 BST, applicants must submit the completed Routledge/Round Table Studentship Awards application form to secretary@commonwealthroundtable.co.uk along with a current CV.
    • On the application form, you must:
    • (100-400 words) Describe your suggested research area for the Routledge/Round Table Studentship grants; (100-400 words) Describe the results you hope to achieve if your application is accepted;
    • Write a 100–400 word summary of the potential effect of your study, why you think it is significant, and how the grant would advance your work.
    • Either put your responses into the form or send them as attachments.
    • The name of your suggested mentor is requested on the form.
    • The name of your suggested mentor is requested on the form.
  • Two referees’ names are also required on the form, one of whom should be your current PhD or DPhil supervisor. You are accountable for requesting references from these referees. Either you may forward them together with the completed application, or they can submit them to secretary@commonwealthroundtable.co.uk by Friday, July 28, 2023, at 17.00 BST.
