Brief Description

We assembled the Female Science Talents group in Berlin for the International Spring Gathering in May 2022 to discuss gendered research for the advancement of sustainable innovation. These insightful talks gave rise to the concept of creating an award to honor great female scientists who do ground-breaking research with a gender perspective and help the United Nations achieve its 17 Sustainable Development Goals.

Honoring these women will be a significant step in tying diversity, gender equality, and the empowerment of underrepresented groups to achievement in science and research. The recipients will become recognized as role models for the whole world’s community of female scientists. Female Science Talents and the Elsevier Foundation collaborated to create the Women Breakthrough Award, which operates separately from the Falling Walls Global Call.

Awards

Innovation Category – 3,000 EUR
The researcher takes a unique approach in her study to a particular gender-related problem in science.
Gender Mainstreaming Category – 3,000 EUR
In accordance with standards comparable to those developed by the German Research Foundation or the European Research Council, the researcher includes gender equality into the design of her research project.
Empowerment Category: 3,000 EUR
Through her study and the planning of her research project, the researcher empowers women and other marginalized individuals in her immediate environment.

Eligibility Criteria

All applicants must meet the following criteria to be considered for the Falling Walls Foundation Scholarships, Germany 2023-24:

Nominees: Prominent researchers in their discipline

Researchers who are nearing completion of their work in all academic fields, including the arts, in academic and nonacademic research organizations across the world — PhD (late stage), postdoctoral researchers, junior professors, or researchers of a comparable level;
Research on one topic linked to the 17 SDGs is being conducted by women in science and business; the project must still be ongoing at the time of submission.
An ongoing research project does not need to be in the planning or financing stages.
The applicant must be 18 years of age or older.
